Chat & Reactions¶
Chat¶
The in-meeting chat lets you send text messages to all participants without interrupting the conversation.
Opening the chat¶
Click the Chat icon in the control bar to open the chat side panel. A badge shows unread message count when the panel is closed.
Sending a message¶
Type your message in the text field at the bottom of the chat panel and press Enter or click the send button.
Chat characteristics¶
- Non-persistent: Chat messages are not saved. When a participant leaves and rejoins, they will not see messages from before they rejoined. When the last participant leaves the room, all chat history is cleared.
- Room-scoped: Messages are visible to all current participants in the room. There are no private messages.
- No file attachments in chat: File sharing is handled via the file upload feature (see Controls & Permissions).
Screen reader announcements¶
New chat messages are announced to screen readers via ARIA live regions. You can configure the verbosity of these announcements in the accessibility settings.
Reactions¶
Reactions let you express yourself without unmuting — a wave, a thumbs up, or a raised hand communicates quickly and silently.
Opening the reactions panel¶
Click the Reactions button in the control bar, or press Ctrl+Shift+E to open the reactions toolbar.
Sending a reaction¶
Click any emoji in the reactions toolbar. Your reaction:
- Appears as an animated overlay on your video tile
- Is visible to all participants for a few seconds
- Is announced to screen readers ("Antoine reacted with 👍")
- Then disappears automatically
Raise hand¶
The Raise hand button (✋) is a special reaction that stays visible until you lower it. It:
- Adds a visual indicator to your tile
- Places you in a queue visible to the host
- Shows the order in which hands were raised
To lower your hand, click the button again.
Reaction settings¶
Reactions can be configured in Settings → Accessibility:
- Vocalize reactions: toggle whether reactions are announced to screen readers
- Reaction sounds can be disabled if needed
Keyboard access¶
Press Ctrl+Shift+E to focus the reactions toolbar. Use arrow keys to navigate between emojis and Enter to send. Press Escape to close the toolbar.
File sharing¶
To share a file during a meeting:
- Click More tools
- Click Share a file
- Select the file from your computer
The file becomes available for all participants to download from the side panel. Note: file sharing is disabled by default on self-hosted instances and must be enabled by the administrator.
